Setting up the workstation:
In order to prevent unnessary fatigue and strain while packing, it’s a good idea to
set up a comfortable, accessible workstation. A kitchen or dining room table works
well for this purpose. Always cover the table with a furniture pad or old
blanket before placing any paper or items on the exposed surface.
Selecting the proper boxes and packing material:
See our materials usage guidelines for
suggestions on the proper application of the various moving boxes and packing materials.
Assembling the moving box:
- Folding the top flaps of the box down, using the small tabs to hold these flaps
along the box sides.

- Next, the box should be "squared up."
- Then, flip over box and tape shut the bottom flaps with three strips of tape.
Always use packing tape--do not simply interlock the bottom or top flaps.
- A completed box ready to be packed.
- Tabs broken in order to seal the box.
There are three options for taping box flaps shut:
- Use three strips of packing tape, making a cross on the top and bottom;
- Put one strip down the middle seam, adding a strip along each of the two side seams;
- Use three parallel strips on and along the middle seam.
Identifying the box:
|
Once packed and sealed, your boxes should be clearly marked on the top with
your last name and the box contents, and on at least two
adjoining sides with the contents of the box (“books”) and the room
where the box should be placed at the destination (“living room - LR”). |

As much
as possible, mark the contents of a box on its sides, rather than on its top.
This will make it easier to identify the contents of each box after the move,
when boxes may be stacked on top of each other. When using recycled boxes
which may have pre-existing writing on them, be sure to write your contents
on the surface of the packing tape sealing the box; and to indicate this to
your crew.

Boxes that contain fragiles should be marked with arrows on the side or the words
"Top Load Only", indicating that the box will remain on top when stacked
in the truck. These markings should be used sparingly and judiciously; only for
boxes containing the most delicate items.
Following are abbreviations for identifying boxes. We strongly recommend utilizing
these when packing yourself and moving with Gentle Giant.
